If you are content with being nobody in particular, content not to stand out, you align yourself with the power of the universe. What looks like weakness to the ego is in fact the only true strength. This spiritual truth is diametrically opposed to the values of our contemporary culture and the way it conditions people to behave. Instead of trying to be the mountain, teaches the ancient Tao Te Ching, “Be the valley of the universe.” In this way, you are restored to wholeness and so “All things will come to you.”

Got The Sugar Blues? Duffy Has Good News!

sugar addictionI recently completed reading a book titled Sugar Blues by William Duffy, I picked it up at a closeout sale at a Borders bookstore for half price. I like this one, learned a few things from it and have since recommended it to a few friends. I also have largely gone on a sugar-free experiment. I also recommend you read this book, it’s a classic diet book, yet it sounds as if it was written a couple years ago, there might be a few outdated bits and pieces but again, this is a classic worth reading and has a wealth of insight to offer you. I had reduced my sugar intake for a few years, seeking to be “moderate”, this book is actually helping me far “very easily” resist sugar. I am almost sugar free these days. I appreciate the history in this book, you will learn about the history of sugar, and other things like fermenting, sauerkraut and beer. You will learn how sugar was invented, and you will be reminded that unlike salt (so essential people used it as currency in the past) sugar is a relatively new addition to our diet. This book touched me in a positive way, and I feel it will do the same with you. You just might never look at food and eating the same way again! all good positive things!

Well, what else does the book talk about? Duffy makes it clear how he dislikes how sugar is labeled (or not labeled) on products and how it is inaccurate to lump refined sugar with other healthy carbs under the same label name. See, not all carbs are the same, but a food label doesn’t tell you that, nor does it say how much added sugar is in a product. You might be surprised to learn what I learned about brown and raw sugar products, and what they put sugar in (ketchup, mayo, dressing, etc), you’ll read about sugar and the persians, indians, crusades, and even slavery! The book is easy to read as well, well documented and sourced.

Knowing what I know now, it is difficult to allow myself to eat sugar, and I have this book to thank. This books acts as an anti-sugar vaccine or an anti-sugar booster shot. If you crave sugar simply read this book and you will no longer crave it!

Sugar is not a nutrient, it is not empty calories either, it is actually an anti-nutrient, when you eat it you are eating something that takes away vitamins from your body to rid itself of sugar.. thus Duffy defines it as a poison, and I see why.

I’ve finished the book a weak ago only, I can say no to sugar now easily, I have resisted cravings and know what it feels like to eat sugar now vs. another source of calories, and I am still learning my body’s response and watching to see how my health will improve. I am unable to tolerate sugar in things now, many things smell and taste too sweet! I do not touch or crave the junk you find at gas stations or coffee shops. Instead of sugar I eat fruits, brown rice, potatoes etc.. real healthful calories. It’s a transition, for sure, but a good and natural one. I wish I had read this book 20yrs ago, as a kid I binged on sugar and now can see how it probably had negative effects on my health.

See, the thing is, “when it comes to sugar, the secret is not moderation but avoidance.”

I Saw a Hole in the Man, Deep Like a Hunger He Will Never Fill

I agree with this quote. However, I must say while many seem to have these gaping holes that they seek to fill (usually with food, habits or material items) some of us do not have the hole. The hole can be plugged, it can be filled. We are whole and complete as we are, we are divine and holy, all of us. Many do not know that. I wish everyone would have the insight and openness to see this on their journey, as this is my truth.

I suggest the following to help you fill that hole: Just Be, Meditate, Experiment with hypnosis, Spend time with nature, in nature, admire the beauty in nature, be alone, explore your own mind/body .. Reconnect with the spirit of nature, feel it, hear it, experience it, enjoy it! It is always there, just as the “answer to fill the hole” is, very close that many can’t see it. This answer is not in words, not in data, not even in seeing. It is so basic, emotional knowing in your gut, that many first need to slow down and reconnect with themselves before they can suddenly find this hole simply gone. The answer is always there, we just think it’s not because it is not in words or science, it is very personal and organic, so close. You just have to look inside of you, and be. When this hole is filled, then everything inside and outside will look alive, more colorful, more holy, you start to see things (everything) differently in some way.

In being, present, silent, alone, i nature, in the moment, you can see that you are whole,

Be Aware Be Alive

During your day, periodically bring your attention back to yourself. Bring your awareness from wherever it is, from the ether, from the computer, from other people; wrap it up and bring it all back in, as if you are calling the troops home. Call your energy and your attention from everywhere it’s at back into you. Regroup your thoughts, breath deeply, calm and be present inside yourself.

If you do this you will be aware, present & most importantly alive.

Almost Done Reading Molecules Of Emotion by Candace Pert

I’ve been reading the book: Molecules Of Emotion by Candace Pert. I have a chapter left to go, and I am very eager to read it.

I have to say, the more you read the better this book gets. The first half is more of a biography, and is a very good foundation for the later parts of the book, it also gives you an insight into the life of a scientists in the lab. The last few chapters have a different taste and are loaded with information, names and useful references.

If you are interested in researching holistic and complementary health topics or the body-mind connection, the later half of this book is a very good starting point.

He is very level-headed and has a very wise view of the world. I listen to his show as often as I can; every time I listen to his show I get educated, and I’ve been listening for 2 years now. He is an award-winning author of twenty books in print in four continents and 18 languages.

I agree with a lot of what he says and I also learn a lot from him. I am a very pleased listener and supporter.

For that and more, Thom Hartmann has earned his well deserved spot in my ‘Best Of” list.

The State Of Women

I read an article titled “Woman, Be Silent” by Teresa Silverthorn a few weeks ago. The article started by mentioning a legend about the first civilization of humanity, where women held the authoritative power over the male community, and were created solely for supervisory reasons. Then the men took over the power of the community using trickery.

The article continues on, here are some excerpts:

Today. Our daughters are dressed in push-up bras, slinky clothing, with low self-esteem. They are used by the media to sell. They are used by the media to provoke.

They are used, and remain silent. They are exploited, and remain silent, thinking this is their only way to survive. They were taught this by their mothers, who barely survived. But, did so, by remaining silent.

I have seen how women sometimes hurt themselves indirectly when they force their daughters to abide by cultural expectations and by how they raise their male children. They are not to blame though, women around the globe have power because they raise tomorrow’s generation, but they are restricted in their ability to change the generations; they are bound by pre-established systems that they live in and depend on.

The restrictions that women face stem from the way in which the current systems of life are set up, we can call these systems the systems of living; what I mean is that the current laws, cultures and expectations of women all depend on the systems of living.

People live up to what is asked of them, many personalities are shaped by the cultures they are exposed to, individuals rise or sink due to these systems of living. The way people see themselves depends to a large extent on the systems of living they find themselves in. The same is true with women. Even an essential question like ‘what it means to be a woman’ in its entirety is determined by that woman’s interactions with the systems of living.

Happy Earth Day, Today And Every Day

gaiaI’m writing today to wish Earth a happy Earth day.
I’m writing to wish you a happy Earth day.
May every day be Earth Day.

If you follow this blog, you know that I have little time to write these days. But I had to write to wish you all a belated happy Earth Day :) Earth day was on April 22nd 2009.

I am keeping this article short and simple. I would like to briefly mention a couple words that come to mind on an occasion like this.

Are you familiar with the word Gaia? I’d guess 50% of the people reading this have heard the word Gaia before. If you know this word, congrats for your knowledge of Greek Mythology.

How about this word: Pantheism ?

If you didn’t recognize these words, no worries. I will briefly discuss what these terms mean here, in the future I will dedicate an article to each term.

Gaia

Also spelled Gaea or Ge, is a word from Greek mythology. Gaia is the goddess of the earth and mother of Cronus and the Titans in ancient mythology. In other words Gaia is the mother of all things, including the Titans, as well as Zeus and all other gods.

The term Gaia is also found in philosophy. You guessed it, Gaia philosophy or the Gaia theory was named after Gaia the Greek Goddess. There are some mystical, scientific and religious predecessors to the Gaia philosophy. Many religious mythologies had a view of Earth as being a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts (e.g. some Native American religions and various forms of shamanism).

Gaia Theory is a broadly inclusive term for related concepts that living organisms on a planet will affect the nature of their environment in order to make the environment more suitable for life.

Gaia is also the name of a hypothesis. The Gaia hypothesis is an ecological hypothesis that deals with the concept of homeostasis, and claims the resident life forms of a host planet coupled with their environment have acted and act as a single, self-regulating system. This system includes the near-surface rocks, the soil, and the atmosphere. This hypothesis proposes that the biosphere and the physical components of the Earth (atmosphere, cryosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere) are closely integrated to form a complex interacting system that maintains the climatic and biogeochemical conditions on Earth in a preferred homeostasis.

Pantheism

Pantheism is made of off two words, ‘pan’ is Greek for ‘all’ and ‘theos’ means ‘God’. It literally means “God is All” and “All is God”.

Pantheism refers to the belief that the universe is divine and should be revered. Pantheism identifies the universe with God but denies any personality or transcendence of such a God

A pantheist is someone who believes that everything is God and God is all. Since God is everything and everything is God, everything is sacred and interconnected. In other words, God and the universe are the same.

From Medication To Meditation!

My opinion on the use of drugs to treat mood-related issues has always been less than favorable. I have seen no reasons to alter the state of my mind with any drugs, ever.

I say, if you have anxiety or depression, this means there is a culprit behind it. You need to deal with the cause, and the emotion will become well balanced again. If you cannot deal with your emotions or thoughts alone seek a friend or a counselor.

You should not want to treat (and i use the word treat very loosely here because you are not treating anything with mood drugs) stress or depression and anxiety with mood altering drugs that rob you from your true self and usually get you hooked for life.

If you are experiencing unbalanced emotions or moods, I guarantee you there is a reason for it, whether it is a spiritual, a subconscious, a cognitive or even a physical reason; there is a reason. The reason may be an imbalance in any/or all of the eight dimensions of wellness (read about the eight dimensions of wellness here) All of these dimensions are interconnected so the cause of your lack of balance probably spans over many of these dimensions.

Do you really want to mask the problem, only to re-experience these emotions once the drugs wore off?  If you take mood drugs you are only dealing with a symptom, not the underlying causes. If you go on mood drugs you are likely placing yourself in an endless loop of drug dependency, stuck, dependent on an outside, manufactured, and expensive medications to keep you well. While, what you need is already available for free, inside of you. You need nothing to be well, all you need is yourself (or a person to talk to), certainly not drugs.

Identify the cause, the imbalances and deal with them, if you do this you’ll see your anxiety evaporate into thin air. Further, you will be empowered by your experience, you will gain experience and you will take control of your life. On the other hand, you could seek refuge in drugs and hide from the real problems.

I find meditation to be a great tool to combat emotional and mood issues. I often tell people: “Say no medication and yes to mediation”. Meditation is one weapon you got, for free, that is inside of you. All you have to do is use it.
