On Blood Thinners? Veggies are OK

May 20th, 2009 Ethan Z. No comments

medical alert bracelet

I know from experience that doctors encourage that a patient on blood thinners continues to eat a balanced diet, including green and leafy veggies.  If you like salad and lettuce you wont have to give them up. The only important thing is to be stable in your diet, don’t eat  a ton of lettuce in one week and no lettuce in the other.

Don’t take my word for it. Below you will see captions from a fredericksburg.com article that talk about this issue:

Veggies not off-limits when taking blood thinners

Americans filled about 30 million prescriptions for the drug Coumadin, also called warfarin, in 2004, according to the Warfarin Institute of America. This medicine helps prevent unwanted blood clots called deep vein thromboses and pulmonary embolisms.

Vitamin K, found in foods such as broccoli and spinach, decreases the effects of warfarin, and this makes many people taking the drug think they can’t eat green vegetables at all

But, don’t give up your veggies. In fact, eating more vegetables and fish, and less red and processed meat, is linked with having fewer clots. That’s according to a letter from acting U.S. Surgeon General Steven Galson, published in this month’s Journal of the American Dietetic Association.

It’s true that large amounts of vitamin K, found in leafy green vegetables, can interfere with warfarin and increase the risk of clots. But it’s not necessary to avoid these foods entirely, according to a statement in the American Heart Association’s journal, Circulation.

GREENS VARY

It may also be helpful to know that some green veggies are low in vitamin K. While most vitamin-K-rich foods are green, not all green foods have the same amount of vitamin K.

For example, these green vegetables are relatively low in vitamin K, having less than 100 micrograms per serving: peas, green beans, celery, iceberg lettuce and green peppers.

Vegetables with moderate amount of vitamin K, 100 to 300 micrograms, include asparagus, broccoli, brussels sprouts, green cabbage, endive, green onions, Romaine lettuce, green leaf lettuce and parsley.

Dark green leafy veggies, such as spinach, kale, collard greens and must-ard greens, have the most vitamin K, more than 1,000 micrograms per serving.

Other ways to help prevent clots, according to the acting surgeon general, including staying active, exercising leg muscles during long trips and not smoking. And, keep eating your veggies.

Alcohol and cranberry juice, while not high in vitamin K, can affect clotting. If you take warfarin, don’t drink alcohol–it may cause bleeding.

My Artificial Sweetener Nightmare

By EV Satie, Guest blogger

I was recently reading a great post on Dr. Mercola’s web site about the dangers of Splenda and it got me to thinking about my own personal experience with these harmful sweeteners.

Having had a weight problem my entire life and not being able to tolerate sugar (it made me want to eat and eat!), I did what most people do in my situation- I used artificial sweeteners. On top of that I am quite compulsive, so I used a lot of it. Drinks sweetened with Equal and Splenda were a daily staple, as well as packets and packets of Splenda, which I put in my coffee and on my food. It took me many years to face up to the fact that these so called “safe” sweeteners were really poising my body, and on top of that I had a chronic illness, which was exacerbated by anything chemical and highly processed.

Needless to say, I finally was willing to let all of them go about a year and a half ago, and although it was difficult, it wasn’t the hardest part of my withdrawal from them. About three days into it, I had a severe liver attack which lasted for almost an hour, and I had to lie on my back and deep breathe the entire time so that I didn’t throw up or have to head to the hospital. I had terrible stabbing pains in my side, burning in my intestines, and hot and cold flashes running through my body. Not a pretty experience at all! It has taken me months to heal my liver, and it still gives me trouble now and then.

The reason that I am sharing this with you is because I really want to get the word out about just how toxic these substances are! Splenda may be derived from sugar, but the end result is that it becomes chlorinated artificial sweetener once it has been molecularly altered.

Do you really want something like that in your body?

Please go to the following websites for more information:

Do yourself a huge favor and stop using these poisons as soon as you can!

From Medication To Meditation!

Thanks for reading this article!

My opinion on the use of drugs to treat mood-related issues has always been less than favorable. I have seen no reasons to alter the state of my mind with any drugs, ever.

I say, if you have anxiety or depression, this means there is a culprit behind it. You need to deal with the cause, and the emotion will become well balanced again. If you cannot deal with your emotions or thoughts alone seek a friend or a counselor.

You should not want to treat (and i use the word treat very loosely here because you are not treating anything with mood drugs) stress or depression and anxiety with mood altering drugs that rob you from your true self and usually get you hooked for life.

If you are experiencing unbalanced emotions or moods, I guarantee you there is a reason for it, whether it is a spiritual, a subconscious, a cognitive or even a physical reason; there is a reason. The reason may be an imbalance in any/or all of the eight dimensions of wellness (read about the eight dimensions of wellness here) All of these dimensions are interconnected so the cause of your lack of balance probably spans over many of these dimensions.

Do you really want to mask the problem, only to re-experience these emotions once the drugs wore off?  If you take mood drugs you are only dealing with a symptom, not the underlying causes. If you go on mood drugs you are likely placing yourself in an endless loop of drug dependency, stuck, dependent on an outside, manufactured, and expensive medications to keep you well. While, what you need is already available for free, inside of you. You need nothing to be well, all you need is yourself (or a person to talk to), certainly not drugs.

Identify the cause, the imbalances and deal with them, if you do this you’ll see your anxiety evaporate into thin air. Further, you will be empowered by your experience, you will gain experience and you will take control of your life. On the other hand, you could seek refuge in drugs and hide from the real problems.

I find meditation to be a great tool to combat emotional and mood issues. I often tell people: “Say no medication and yes to mediation”. Meditation is one weapon you got, for free, that is inside of you. All you have to do is use it.

Make the move now,

“From Medication to Meditation”

Is Garlic A Brain Poison?

Garlic, Good or Bad?

Garlic, Good or Bad?

I came across this today, does anyone out there have more info on this?

From GARLIC – TOXIC SHOCK! Reprinted from Nexus Magazine, Feb/Mar 2001. Source: From a lecture by physicist Dr. Robert C Beck, DSc, given at the Whole Life Expo, Seattle, WA, USA, in March 1996.

The reason garlic is so toxic, the sulphone hydroxyl ion penetrates the blood-brain barrier, just like DMSO [a sulfoxide], and is a specific poison for higher-life forms and brain cells. We discovered this, much to our horror, when I (Bob Beck, DSc) was the world’s largest manufacturer of ethical EEG [electroencephalography] feedback equipment.

We’d have people come back from lunch that looked clinically dead on an encephalograph, which we used to calibrate their progress. “Well, what happened?” “Well, I went to an Italian restaurant and there was some garlic in my salad dressing!” So we had them sign things that they wouldn’t touch garlic before classes or we were wasting their time, their money and my time.

I guess some of you … are pilots or have been in flight tests… I was in flight test engineering in Doc Hallan’s group in the 1950s. The flight surgeon would come around every month and remind all of us: “Don’t you dare touch any garlic 72 hours before you fly one of our airplanes, because it’ll double or triple your reaction time. You’re three times slower than you would be if you’d not had a few drops of garlic.”
Well, we didn’t know why for 20 years later, until I owned the Alpha-Metrics Corporation. We were building biofeedback equipment and found out that garlic usually desynchronises your brain waves.

Consciousness, Water & Healing – Radio Interview with Stephan Schwartz

January 31st, 2009 Ethan Z. No comments

Water has the ability to be altered by conscious attention, as evidence seems to indicate. Schwartz reported that Dean Radin had recently replicated Masaru Emoto’s groundbreaking research, demonstrating that the shape of water crystals can be affected by thoughts and music.  Water was tested in an experiment involving 14 healers and patients and showed changes in its hydrogen bonds that were not present in the control group (water not exposed to the healing thoughts), Schwartz detailed. His research indicates that the consciousness of all living things from humans to plants is connected.

If consciousness can alter water, and we are made of more than 70% water, can consciousness and water be used in healing?

Watch 10 you tube videos (coast to coast radio interview with Stephan A. Schwartz) and discuss this topic further here (login not required to join the discussion). The interview is very interesting I recommended listing to the whole thing.

Stephan A. Schwartz is research associate in the cognitive science laboratory and a leading expert on the practical application of remote viewing and aspects of extra ordinary human functioning, he is also a co-author of over 30 papers, and is involved in energy medicine work and a member of the parapsychology association

The ONLY Water You Should Drink

January 28th, 2009 Ethan Z. No comments

I have been researching clean drinking water; after a number of months of research, I am convinced the only water anyone should drink is distilled water. I am looking at building my own water steam distiller, since I rather not buy one for $100 + My distiller will run on ‘any’ heat source, which may come in handy when camping (or when there is no electricity).. I discuss these here:

Checkout this discussion: Is There Any Good Water To Drink Out There??

Find out how to buy or build a distiller and share your ideas here: Water Distillation at Home

I will soon share my design and resutls.

Your Immune System Can Stop Cancer

January 23rd, 2009 Ethan Z. No comments

Read five (5) news articles on this topic. Here

ScienceDaily (Nov. 19, 2007)

Immune System Can Drive Cancers Into Dormant State

A multinational team of researchers has shown for the first time that the immune system can stop the growth of a cancerous tumor without actually killing it.

Scientists have been working for years to use the immune system to eradicate cancers, a technique known as immunotherapy. The new findings prove an alternate to this approach exists: When the cancer can’t be killed with immune attacks, it may be possible to find ways to use the immune system to contain it. The results also may help explain why some tumors seem to suddenly stop growing and go into a lasting period of dormancy.

This news article reminded me of something I heard Dr. Beck say once. Watch part 1 of a youtube video of Dr. Beck entitled “how to cure cancer & HIV (Dr. Bob Beck)”

“Thanks to the animal model we have developed, scientists can now reproduce this condition of tumor dormancy in the laboratory and look directly at cancer cells being held in check by the immune system,” says co-author Robert Schreiber, Ph.D., Alumni Professor of Pathology and Immunology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. “That will allow us to see if we can model this state therapeutically.”

The study’s authors call the cancer-immune system stalemate equilibrium. During equilibrium, the immune system both decreases the cancer’s drive to replicate and kills some of the cancerous cells, but not quickly enough to eliminate or shrink the tumor.

Germany Warns Citizens to Avoid Using Wi-Fi

December 24th, 2008 Ethan Z. No comments

It is my opinion that not enough research has been done, and that financial interests have placed obstacles to hinder honest scientific research into wifi and cell phone signals and their effects on living tissue and humans. I came across this article today. You also may want to checkout this article to find nearby wireless antennas

The Original Article Below was Written by Geoffrey Lean – The Independent UK on Sunday 09 September 2007

People should avoid using Wi-Fi wherever possible because of the risks it may pose to health, the German government has said.

Its surprise ruling – the most damning made by any government on the fast-growing technology – will shake the industry and British ministers, and vindicates the questions that The Independent on Sunday has been raising over the past four months.

And Germany’s official radiation protection body also advises its citizens to use landlines instead of mobile phones, and warns of “electrosmog” from a wide range of other everyday products, from baby monitors to electric blankets.

The German government’s ruling – which contrasts sharply with the unquestioning promotion of the technology by British officials – was made in response to a series of questions by Green members of the Bundestag, Germany’s parliament.

The Environment Ministry recommended that people should keep their exposure to radiation from Wi-Fi “as low as possible” by choosing “conventional wired connections”. It added that it is “actively informing people about possibilities for reducing personal exposure”.

Its actions will provide vital support for Sir William Stewart, Britain’s official health protection watchdog, who has produced two reports calling for caution in using mobile phones and who has also called for a review of the use of Wi-Fi in schools. His warnings have so far been ignored by ministers and even played down by the Health Protection Agency, which he chairs.

By contrast the agency’s German equivalent – the Federal Office for Radiation Protection – is leading the calls for caution.

Florian Emrich, for the office, says Wi-Fi should be avoided “because people receive exposures from many sources and because it is a new technology and all the research into its health effects has not yet been carried out”.

Download A Complete Wellness Tracker 100% Free

December 17th, 2008 Ethan Z. 2 comments

I used multiple resources and created a comprehensive wellness tracker work sheet that you could use to track everything related to your wellness (physical, mental, intellectual, emotional, etc..). I put this in a PDF format here for anyone to download free of charge. No registration required, simply right click and save the file.

Click here to download the Complete Personal Wellness Tracker

I had a few nutrition classes over the years, I also have a few books that had sheets you could use to track food intake. The problem with these sheets is that they don’t track enough. A person is not just what s/he eats, we are complex (emotional, mental, spiritual, etc..) beings and there are a lot of (inner and outer) environmental variables that effect us.

One day at a physical therapy meeting, the physical therapist suggested I track my food intake to find what is causing my migraines. He suggested using a tracking sheet very similar to the one I am giving away here. He then made a comment that these sheets only track food intake, so they ignore many other things.

It felt as if he read my mind. I took that thought and did the research, comparisons, and came up with this tracker sheet that will help you track way more than just food intake. It tracks many variables that ultimately have an effect on your overall wellness.

You now can keep track of your expectations, emotions, sleep, mood, weather, physical exercise, plus more.

This sheet is self explanatory, I hope that no instructions are needed. My only instruction to you is to remember this sheet is a self-help tool. Use it for your own benefit, no one will read it so don’t worry about spelling and neatness, this is for you only, to help you track variables that may be effecting your wellness. As long as you can make sense of your notes then you’ve been successful in tracking the variables.

There is no such thing as a perfect tracking sheet. This one is a general attempt to facilitate to the needs of many. You now have to take it and personalize it. If you have something you want to track that is not on this sheet, simply write it in, any white space will do, the margins and bottom part of the sheet are god spots for these additional notes.

Once enough data has been collected you could reflect back at the notes, and see patterns, find behavior, thoughts or actions and what effects they produce.

Your feedback is important, this is not the first version, and will not be the last. If you want to ad a variable to track please let me know. I am working on the next version and will publish it once it’s completed.

I give this away to you, asking for nothing, sending you wishes of well being.

Stay well.

Fat, The Good And The Bad

November 27th, 2008 Ethan Z. No comments

Fats are essential to your body and health. Fats help your body absorb nutrients, they help your nerves function, they keep your cells’ membranes (walls) healthy, keep your skin and hair healthy, and much more. The most important organ in your body, your brain, is basically made off 50% fat.

All fats are not created equal, however. Some fats promote your health, others increase the risk of heart disease, cancers, and even cause aging and general sickness.

So what should we do? Your goal is to replace all bad fats with good fats in your diet. This article provides some guidance

The Bad Fats:

  • Saturated Fats are Found In:
Animal products such as meat, dairy, eggs and seafood. Some plants are also high in saturated fats such as coconut oil, palm oil and palm kernel oil.
    Effects:
Raise total blood cholesterol as well as LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol).
  • Hydrogenated Fats/Oils
When liquid oils are “hydrogenate” trans fatty acids are formed.

Holistic Dentistry Tooth Extraction Vs. A Conventional Root Canal

November 27th, 2008 Ethan Z. 10 comments

Most holistic dentists prefer to extract a tooth than to do a root canal mainly because they believe root canals are never a 100% sterile and bacteria left behind could flourish if your immune system is compromised. My (non-holistic) dentist said that 95% o root canals are successful, this leaves 5% of root canals to fail. If they fail, an infection can occur at the bone structure that may not be easily detectable.

I found that not all holistic dentists have this position, almost none of the traditional dentists prefer extraction over a root canal. Over 95% of root canals are successful. So many people have had root canals, multiple of them. These root canal procedures are done routinely and safely. However, just because every body else is doing something doesn’t mean that it’s the best choice. For instance, take drinking pop, or using cell phones, eating fast food, eating lots of meat, smoking, getting drunk, need I continue?.. Many people take actions that negatively impact their well being for whatever reasons, be it lack of information, disinformation, ignorance, lack of interest, etc…

Here, in trying to decide if root canals are good or bad, IMHO (In my humble opinion), we are faced with a lack of information, making deciding what’s best a little tricky. I shared what I know here and ask you to contribute what you know so we can all benefit.

Nickel-Titanium File Tip Broke Off Inside A Canal During My Root Canal Procedure!

November 27th, 2008 Ethan Z. No comments

Dental health has a great impact on a person’s overall wellness. Many negative health effects have been linked to bad oral health. For instance, gum disease (an inflammation of the gums) could spread infection to the bone supporting the teeth and from there to the blood stream. Further, gum disease has been linked to cardiovascular disease and arthritis.

Plaque (a sticky colorless film of bacteria that constantly builds up then thickens and hardens on the teeth) hardens into tartar and contributes to infections in the gums. Constant brushing, flossing and oral hygiene practices are needed to fight plaque.

There’s a lot to say about oral hygiene and oral health. But this article is about one particular concern of mine, primarily root canals. I recently had to have a root canal procedure done; it was not as bad as I expected it to be, but while going through having a root canal I came across some pieces of information that I would like to share with you here, perhaps I could provide some answers to a few of your concerns. Perhaps I could put your mind at ease, or maybe scare you more. I will discuss the fracture of rotary nickel-titanium endodontic instruments inside of your teeth canals.

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)

November 19th, 2008 Ethan Z. No comments

CSA is a socio-economic model of food production, sales, and distribution aimed at both increasing the quality of food and the quality of care given the land, plants and animals – while substantially reducing potential food losses and financial risks for the producers. It is also a method for small-scale commercial farmers and gardeners to have a successful, small-scale closed market. CSA’s focus is usually on a system of weekly delivery or pick-up of vegetables, sometimes also flowers, fruits, herbs and even milk or meat products in some cases. A variety of production and economic sub-systems are in use worldwide.

How The CSA System Works

CSA generally is the practice of focusing on the production of high quality foods using ecological, organic or biodynamic farming methods. This kind of farming operates with a much greater-than-usual degree of involvement of consumers and other stakeholders—resulting in a stronger than usual consumer-producer relationship. The core design includes developing a cohesive consumer group that is willing to fund a whole season’s budget in order to get quality foods. The system has many variations on how the farm budget is supported by the consumers and how the producers then deliver the foods. By CSA theory, the more a farm embraces whole-farm, whole-budget support, the more it can focus on quality and reduce the risk of food waste or financial loss.

In its most formal and structured European and North American form, CSAs focus on having:

  • A transparent, whole season budget for producing a specified wide array of products for a set number of weeks a year;
  • A common-pricing system where producers and consumers discuss and democratically agree to pricing based on the acceptance of the budget; and
  • A ‘shared risk and reward’ agreement, i.e. that the consumers eat what the farmers grow even with the vagaries of seasonal growing.

Individuals, families or groups do not pay for x pounds or kilograms of produce, but rather support the budget of the whole farm and receive weekly what is seasonally ripe. This approach eliminates the marketing risks and costs for the producer and an enormous amount of time, often manpower too, and allows producers to focus on quality care of soils, crops, animals, co-workers—and on serving the customers. There is little to no loss (i.e. waste) in this system, since the producers know in advance who they are growing for and how much to grow, etc.

Some confusion about the CSA system has arisen as some CSAs are less whole-budget, whole-farm oriented and have more the character of subscription farming. This kind of arrangement is also referred to as crop-sharing or box schemes. In such cases, farmers often simply set the weekly prices and retain a high level of risk, marketing costs and so on. Thus there is an important distinction between the producers (farmers, gardeners, etc.) selling shares in the upcoming season’s harvest or selling a weekly subscription that includes x, y, z amounts of produce. In all cases, participants contribute a pre-agreed amount (sometimes an equal amount, sometimes variable) and in return receive a weekly harvest.

Some farms are dedicated entirely to CSA, while others also sell through on-farm stands, farmers’ markets, and other channels. Most CSAs are owned by the farmers, while some offer shares in the farm as well as the harvest. Consumers have organized their own CSA projects, going as far as renting land and hiring farmers.

Typically, CSA farms are small, independent, labor-intensive, family farms. Many CSAs practice ecological, organic or biodynamic agriculture, avoiding pesticides and inorganic fertilizers.

STOP! Don’t Buy L’Oreal, Cover Girl or Dior Lipstick

November 17th, 2008 Ethan Z. No comments

The following brands contain high levels of toxic lead in them: L’Oreal Colour Riche “True Red,” L’Oreal Colour Riche “Classic Wine”, Cover Girl Incredifull Lipcolor “Maximum Red” and Dior Addict “Positive Red.”

L’Oreal had the highest lead results in the samples tested by a consumer advocacy group. You should be upset at L’Oreal, Cover Girl, Dior and other cosmetic companies, also at the FDA for not monitoring the substances that we use (and ingest) more carefully, and ultimately for corporations caring more about profit than the health of their consumers.

We live in a “Consumers, be Aware” world. But, how could we have known that lead existed in a product if lead isn’t listed as an ingredient? Consumers should always be cautious, but how could they make decisions if they are being deceived when information such as lead levels are not disclosed?

What Does It Mean To Be Healthy?

November 16th, 2008 Ethan Z. No comments

What does being healthy mean? What do you mean when you refer to yourself or someone else using the term “healthy”? Have you paused to consider the ways in which we use the word “healthy” and what “healthy” ultimately refers to?

Here, together, we will look at this word and at the idea of being healthy. We will find what being healthy really means. We will also see how the eight dimensions of wellness and the seeking of wholeness relate to health and being healthy.

Defining being healthy (having health) may be easiest when defining the lack of health. It’s simple really; when something hurts or feels abnormal in your body, you know right away that you are (or that a part of your body is) now unhealthy. So, does being healthy mean the lack of pain? Is this a good enough definition of health?

Dentistry Without Mercury

October 27th, 2008 Ethan Z. No comments

I visited my holistic dentist last week in order to get some x-rays taken and ask about removing an older amalgam; while I was there I was given a book titled “Dentistry Without Mercury” by Sam Ziff and Michael Ziff.

I have not read this small book yet but intend to in the future. I also have a lot of research done on the effects of mercury and why mercury amalgam are bad for you and should be taken out ASAP. It is unbelievable how many of us have toxic amalgams in our mouths.

The Dentist will remove my amalgam and use something else. They also found another area that needs work, a pretty large (in my opinion) decay in one tooth. It is funny how I had jaw pains but did not attribute that to my teeth needing work; I just ignored and never was ‘aware’ of my mouth and teeth even when there was pain. I plan on being more aware of my body including my teeth. Stay tuned, there’s more to come on this.

The Eight Dimensions of Wellness
