Because people are so afraid of looking inwards and facing themselves (The Self) that they prefer to worship others instead.
Carl Jung’s quote is “People will do anything, no matter how absurd, in order to avoid facing their own soul.”.
Plus it’s catchy for sheep, just turn on the damn television to some reality show or read Glamour magazine.
